Additional Features

Amenities like electrically heated glass windows, seat belt pre tensioners, air bags and a safety cage were first introduced in the generation 1 C70.

In the second-generation models, the three-section hardtop assembly introduced a global window switch with the help of which all windows could be lowered or raised at the same time. It also featured a button for raising the convertible top within the trunk to create space for cargo.

There is a provision for the transportation of long objects, too. The backrest of the rear seats has a hatch, which makes it possible.

The Convertible Top

The cloth convertible top was available in four different colours and could be operated from a button on the dashboard.

The convertible top in the second-generation cars could be raised without any extra space at the back but a height clearance is required. The operation is possible only in a stationary mode and should not be abandoned halfway by the driver.

The convertible top has various features to make the roof set firmly in place while providing a wind blocker with parcel storage. A lot of thought has gone behind the designing of the hood while keeping the safety of passengers in mind.

Exterior Design

The model was introduced in a saffron pearl metallic colour, which became its signature colour. A total of 145 cars were produced with this colour.

With the second-generation cars, the trunk lid could open in a rear hinged mode as well as the standard mode. This was incorporated in the design to facilitate the stowing of the convertible roof. This hood was made of Aluminium and the frame for the hood was made in steel.

A two-tone leather interior was seen in the first models of the C70 series and also a Dolby Pro Logic I stereo. This featured and integrated 3-disc changer, 400 watts of power and 11 speakers.

The Drawbacks

The design had drawbacks, which led to visibility issues and noticeable vibration when riding, specifically in the passenger compartment.

Safety Features

The safety systems introduced in the second-generation cars included airbags, which inflated upwards on impact from the side. Also the curtains offer head protection with the help of double rows of slats, which remain upright even when the windows are open. These also deflate slowly and provide protection in case the car happens to roll over.

A Roll-Over Protection Structure comprising of two pyrotechnically charged roll hoops stowed behind the rear seats. These deploy themselves in case of conditions where the car is likely to roll. It is deployed irrespective of the position of the roof.

Special Editions

C70 Inscription (2011–2013) – Only 2000 units of this special model were produced per year in three colours – Black Stone, Black Sapphire and Ice White. The wheels were 18-inch black Midir wheels. Polished spokes and perimeter added to the look. The model also featured a grille painted in high gloss colours and LED lights surrounded by contrasting chrome. The interiors sported a leather covered dashboard and off black or calcite sovereign hide upholstery, each with contrasting stitching.

Inscriptions could be seen on the front headrests, carpets, levers, steering wheel, the gear changing lever and even the pedals.

2013 Volvo Special Edition C70 (2013)

This Special Edition C70 was based on the model for the Canadian market with Blindspot information system, 18-Inch Midir wheels with diamond cut alloy rims, retractable mirrors, wind blocker, and three available colours – Ice White, Electric Silver and Ember Black. The interiors were covered in Graphite coloured Sovereign Hide and cranberry coloured leather.

The Closing Down

The production of the second-generation, C70s was started as a joint venture with Pininfarina Sverige in Uddevalla, Sweden in the year 2005. As the joint venture was terminated, the production of C70 also had to be terminated. The fateful day was 4th of October, 2011. The last C70 was rolled out of the facility on 25th June, 2013.

A series of cars, which showed us a promise of great innovations, is still popular and in demand. There are many who still search for C70 Volvo on sale to add them to their collection of cars for the wonderful features it had to offer.
